Talk of the Town is a language center in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which promotes debates in English, French and Italian on contemporary themes. Every week, groups of four to seven people with similar profile and linguistic skills get together to speak up and debate movies, literature, politics, economics, philosophy, arts, behavior (see examples here – Debates in English).
Our dynamic debate methodology is led by highly qualified professionals, working in a comfortable debate room with a beautiful landscape – the Lagoon, Christ The Redeemer. Everything here was conceived to make language practice a truly unique experience.
Talk of the Town now welcomes those who visit Rio de Janeiro to join this experience and learn Portuguese. The Portuguese For Foreigners methodology at Talk of the Town has an exclusive approach, which associates cultural exchange and communication skills improvement in a very special environment. Our purpose here is to motivate the student – intellectually, culturally, but also visually and sensorially. Having fun is part of the game.
Innovative Didactic Materials
Our exclusive teaching materials are based on the association with the Brazilian culture , and invite the student to an environment that balances the four basic communication skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Within this educational perspective, the student feels immerse and, thus, motivated to recognize the deep cultural diversity, which is the first step to understand linguistic behaviors.
Teacher and Monitor
Our Portuguese for Foreigners course accepts maximum of 6 students per group. We manage to integrate students of various nationalities and cultural backgrounds. In order to do so, Portuguese for Foreigners teachers at Talk of the Town have to be proficient in at least three languages besides Portuguese.
Professor Servulo Resende teaches English, German and Portuguese for foreigers for over 20 years, and also speaks Spanish. He has a Masters and phD in German and English languages at Friedrich Wilhelms-Universitat, Bonn, Germany. He has given Portuguese classes at Ministry of External Relations in Germany, Der Spiegel; Siemens, UFF, Mercedes Bens; German Consulate in Rio de Janeiro, British Council, among other institutions. He was once personal interpreter of German first lady Cristina Rau, while oficially visiting Brazil.
